The Eureka Centre is located in East Ballarat adjacent to what is considered to be the site of one of the most significant events in the evolution of Australian democracy - the Eureka Rebellion.

As well as being one of Victoria's popular tourist destinations, The Centre provides a national focus for debate about, and interpretation of, the Eureka story.

Celebration - Eureka 155
This year marks the 155th anniversary of the Eureka rebellion. The uprising by the miners and the Government's attack on their Stockade in December 1854 was Australia's only armed civil uprising. It was a battle over democracy and fairness and contributed to the spirit of freedom that Australians have come to regard as their birthright.

Redevelopment 2009-11

Construction of Stage Two of the Eureka Centre will begin before the end of the year. Council has received $10 million in grants from the State and Federal governments to fund the redevelopment of the existing centre. The Eureka Centre will be renamed the Australian Centre for Democracy at Eureka, and will tell the story of the 1854 Eureka uprising.

The Eureka Centre will feature innovative and cutting edge exhibits and installations which will be specially designed to tell the Eureka story in an engaging way.
